LifeCellsNI, a Londonderry-based health and life sciences startup, has secured £590,000 (€690,000) in pre-seed investment to establish Northern Ireland's first dedicated Human Tissue Authority-licensed stem cell storage and contingency biobank facility. The investment round was led by The AMP Angel Syndicate, with support from Co-Fund III managed by Clarendon Fund Managers.

News Letter reported that the company is developing a fully regulated cryogenic storage and laboratory processing hub designed to operate under strict Human Tissue Authority governance frameworks. Installation of a specialist cleanroom is underway, with commissioning, validation and licensing milestones scheduled ahead of a 2026 operational launch.

The facility aims to unlock regenerative medicine and advanced therapy opportunities across Northern Ireland by providing critical biobanking infrastructure previously unavailable in the region. LifeCellsNI's licensed biobank will enable stem cell storage and processing capabilities for clinical and research applications.

Dr Michael Conwell and Catherine King are leading the development of the facility in Ebrington Square, Londonderry. The Human Tissue Authority licensing process requires stringent compliance with regulatory standards governing human tissue storage, handling and use for therapeutic purposes.

The pre-seed funding will support infrastructure development, regulatory compliance processes and operational setup costs. Biobanking facilities play an essential role in supporting regenerative medicine research and clinical applications by providing secure, regulated storage for biological materials including stem cells, tissues and other samples.

Northern Ireland has established itself as a growing hub for life sciences innovation, with LifeCellsNI's biobank representing significant infrastructure development in the region's regenerative medicine and advanced therapy capabilities. The facility will operate under Human Tissue Authority (Human Applications) licensing, ensuring compliance with UK regulatory frameworks governing therapeutic use of human tissues.
