Beacon Hospital has completed the first procedure in Ireland's first dedicated neurovascular hybrid theatre in a private hospital, marking a significant advance in the country's private neurosurgical capability.

According to a report by Irish Medical Times, the 86 square metre theatre was designed specifically for complex neurovascular procedures and incorporates an ARTIS pheno robotic imaging system working in conjunction with a Baxter TS7500 operating table to produce high-resolution 2D and 3D intraoperative imaging without moving the patient from the table. The first procedures were carried out by Consultant Neurosurgeon Professor Mohsen Javadpour.

Previously, patients undergoing surgery on blood vessel abnormalities of the brain, such as aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations, required an initial operation followed by a separate angiogram several days later to assess outcomes, with some patients then returning to theatre for a subsequent procedure. The integrated imaging technology now allows surgeons to obtain angiograms and assess outcomes in real time during the initial operation, enabling treatment that previously required multiple procedures to be completed in a single surgical session.

The clinical benefits include fewer procedures under anaesthetic, reduced risk of complications associated with multiple surgeries including infection, and a lower physical, emotional, and psychological burden on patients and their families. The ARTIS pheno system can also produce high-quality CT-like images during complex neurosurgical operations, enabling surgeons to detect and manage intraoperative complications immediately before the patient leaves the theatre.
