Quality HealthCare Medical Services (QHMS), one of Hong Kong’s major private healthcare providers, has launched a Robotic Process Automation (RPA) internship in collaboration with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s School of Accounting and Finance. The initiative aims to modernise internal operations while equipping future professionals with digital transformation skills.

The strategic programme embeds six undergraduate students across five QHMS departments to design and deploy nine RPA solutions. These automations target core administrative functions, including clinic report generation, billing query handling, and amendment form processing. Together, the use cases are projected to save the company roughly 1,600 staff hours each month, highlighting how automation can directly enhance operational productivity in private healthcare.

Elaine Chu, General Manager of QHMS, described the initiative as a “structured, low-risk way to test emerging technologies” while giving students real-world exposure to healthcare operations. The partnership allows QHMS teams to identify efficiency gaps and experiment with automation tools in a live setting — without disrupting critical clinical workflows.

Participants are business students rather than engineers, underscoring the accessibility of automation in non-technical fields. They undergo a five-day RPA training before their 24-week placement, which includes designing, testing, and deploying software bots that automate repetitive digital tasks. Deliverables include initial prototypes in the first term and finalised automation bots and documentation in the second.

Professor Brian Kei from PolyU’s FinTech programme said the partnership “bridges academic learning and healthcare practice” while preparing graduates for the growing demand in process automation and data-driven decision-making across the healthcare industry.
