Irish start-up Nocomed launches carbon emissions platform for healthcare supply chains

A Dublin-based start-up is targeting the private healthcare sector's growing carbon accountability gap with a purpose-built sustainability platform designed to help life sciences and healthcare companies manage emissions reporting and reduction at scale.

According to The Irish Times, Nocomed was co-founded in 2024 by Rosemary Durcan and Dónal Adams as a spin-out from the founder's programme at Dogpatch Labs. The company has been revenue-generating since late last year and has raised €850,000 to date from pitch prize funding, private industry backers and other sources.

The platform is aimed at medtech and pharma manufacturers as well as those supplying and distributing within the sector. Its launch feature automates carbon emissions measurement and reporting for companies supplying the NHS, which now requires a carbon reduction plan and supporting data as part of its tendering process.

Durcan said the challenge is urgent. "We've now reached a point where healthcare and its supply chain produce more carbon emissions than the aviation sector. Between them, they are responsible for over 5 per cent of global carbon emissions, and around 70 per cent of that footprint sits with suppliers."

She said incumbent tools are not fit for purpose. "Most healthcare suppliers still rely on spreadsheets, consultants, or generic tools to calculate their emissions. This in turn results in poor visibility, high costs and very little in terms of real emissions reduction."

A carbon reduction simulator is currently being piloted with customers. Nocomed operates a subscription model scaled to customer size, with seven staff now in place as the company prepares to expand its platform offering.
