Howden, a UK insurance broker, has become the first partner in the Independent Doctors Federation’s new IDrF Partnerships programme. The appointment gives doctors in private practice closer access to specialist insight on medical indemnity and the risk decisions involved in setting up and running a practice.

The Independent Doctors Federation, known as IDrF, is a UK membership body for doctors in private practice, offering advocacy, regulatory guidance, education and a professional community. It represents more than 1,500 doctors working across specialisms and general practice.

Howden has worked alongside IDrF as a corporate member for several years, supporting events and sharing insight on medical indemnity and practice risk. It is listed among IDrF’s corporate members alongside organisations including HCA International, Cleveland Clinic London and Spire Healthcare.

IDrF Partnerships are designed to build closer relationships with carefully selected organisations whose expertise complements the federation’s advocacy, regulatory guidance, education and professional community. Each partnership is intended to be grounded in shared values and focused on useful resources, trusted insight and meaningful connections for members across the lifecycle of private practice.

Through the Howden partnership, members will benefit from closer access to the broker’s specialist knowledge, with opportunities to develop resources and educational activity around members’ needs.

The structural driver is the changing shape of private practice careers, with a doctor’s needs evolving from exploring independent work through to establishing a practice, managing risk, developing services and planning for the future. Howden’s own private practice pathways describe consultants increasingly wanting to build robust governance from the outset rather than treating private practice as an end-of-career move. Those pathways bring together partner organisations offering exclusive benefits and discounts on services ranging from patient billing and insurance to ePractice platforms and pharmaceutical support.

For the sector, the partnership confirms that professional bodies for independent doctors are formalising commercial relationships with specialist insurers to support doctors across the full lifecycle of private practice.
