Declan O'Callaghan, retired Medical Director and former senior leader across some of the world's most prominent pharmaceutical companies, has been confirmed as a member of the judging panel for the Private Healthcare Awards 2026, bringing a career that spans clinical cardiology, academic medicine, and pharmaceutical industry leadership to the evaluation of excellence across Ireland's private healthcare sector.

O'Callaghan spent 15 years practising in clinical and academic cardiology before transitioning into the pharmaceutical industry, where he served as Medical Director at Bristol-Myers Squibb, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, and Pfizer Healthcare Ireland. That trajectory, from frontline clinical practice through to the executive leadership of medical functions within global pharma organisations, gives him a perspective on healthcare innovation and patient outcomes that is both clinically grounded and commercially informed.

His understanding of how major pharmaceutical companies operate, and how their medical leadership translates scientific development into patient benefit, is directly relevant to a programme that recognises healthcare excellence.

Moreover, his governance and professional contributions extend that influence further. O'Callaghan served for many years as Chairman of the Association of Pharmaceutical Physicians in Ireland, qualified as a Pharmaceutical Physician, and sits on the National Specialist Training Committee in Pharmaceutical Medicine.

He acts as advisor to the Irish Pharmaceutical Healthcare Association, a role that keeps him engaged with the policy and regulatory environment shaping healthcare delivery in Ireland. He holds a Diploma in Health Economics and a Diploma in Corporate Governance from UCD, qualifications that reflect a commitment to understanding healthcare systems as much as individual clinical or commercial practice.

O'Callaghan joins a panel that includes Karen Charnley of the All Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care, Claudia McGloin of The Regenerative Expert Nurse, Caroline Moran of Hibernian Healthcare at Home, Richard Morton of MatchMedics, Vishnu Renjith of RCSI, Brid Seoighe of Johnson and Johnson, and John Sweeney of HCI.

The Private Healthcare Awards 2026 gala will take place on 2 October 2026 at the Crowne Plaza Dublin Airport.
