Cathedral Eye Clinic expands with major investment in Belfast

Cathedral Eye Clinic, a Northern Ireland-based specialist provider, has announced the start of construction on a new facility in Belfast following a €30m (£26m) funding injection from Cardinal Capital, Ireland’s largest private equity firm. 

In a published report, Belfast Telegraph said that the investment gives Cardinal a majority stake in the business, marking a strategic step in scaling ophthalmology services across the island of Ireland and the UK.

Founded in 2008 by eye surgeon Johnny Moore, Cathedral Eye Clinic operates a branch in Birmingham and employs 23 specialist consultants. 

Its clinical services cover cataract surgery, refractive and laser vision correction, retinal treatments and glaucoma management, positioning the business as a leading provider in its field.

Mr Moore said: “Belfast has always been at the heart of what we do, and this new clinic represents a major statement of intent for healthcare in Northern Ireland. Our goal is simple: to build the best eye surgery clinic on the island of Ireland, right here in Belfast, offering patients faster access to world-class treatment across the full range of eye conditions.”

The Belfast site will double current surgical capacity and incorporate the latest clinical technology, aiming to address rising patient demand and reduce waiting lists, which remain under sustained pressure across the region. 

The new premises will be located opposite the existing Academy Street clinic and are described by the clinic as the most comprehensive eye surgery facility on the island.

Looking beyond Northern Ireland, Cathedral Eye Clinic plans to develop additional clinics in Dublin and the Midlands in England to expand access to advanced ophthalmology care.
