Bon Secours opens new Limerick hospital to expand Ireland’s private healthcare capacity

Bon Secours Health System has opened its long-anticipated hospital in Ballysimon, Limerick — a €213 million investment that underscores the growing scale and sophistication of Ireland’s private healthcare sector. The 96-bed, 23,050-square-metre facility is the first major hospital development in the country in almost twenty years.

The hospital is set to treat 50,000 patients annually, offering general medicine, cardiology, neurology, oncology, and day-case surgery. Services are being transferred in phases to minimise disruption, with full operations expected soon. For a city experiencing steady population growth, the facility fills a critical service gap in private medical care across the Mid-West region.

Designed by HOK’s London studio with Reddy Architecture + Urbanism, the hospital integrates medical planning, sustainability, and patient-centred care principles. Its two-block layout, connected by glazed bridges and open courtyards, improves flow between clinical and non-clinical areas. Features such as natural ventilation, LED lighting, and air-to-water heat pump systems demonstrate a commitment to environmental performance without compromising patient comfort.

Bon Secours Group CEO Alan Sharp described the opening as a milestone for both the organisation and Irish healthcare. Beyond improved care access, the project contributes to local employment and strengthens Ireland’s private medical infrastructure at a time of rising demand for quality hospital capacity.
