Indian speciality pharmaceutical company Ajanta Pharma Ltd is reportedly evaluating the establishment of a manufacturing operation in Ireland to support its production of generic medicines for private healthcare markets in Europe.

The company, headquartered in Mumbai, currently operates seven manufacturing sites in India, six producing finished formulations and one making active pharmaceutical ingredients. It also maintains a research and development facility in Mumbai employing almost 1,000 staff.

A spokesperson for Ajanta Pharma declined to comment on the reports, and no details have been confirmed regarding the potential location, scale, or timeline of the proposed Irish facility.

Industry observers note that Ireland’s established pharmaceutical infrastructure, skilled workforce, and regulatory environment make it an attractive location for multinationals. If realised, a local base could facilitate access to European private healthcare markets and ease distribution of generic products.

The potential move aligns with wider industry trends, as pharmaceutical companies seek EU-based manufacturing to reduce logistical dependencies and meet regulatory requirements.
